Steps

Support

Sit bones, lower leg, outer edge of lower foot, and palms.

Enter

  1. Sit upright with your legs extended.
  2. Bend your left knee; place its shin parallel to the front edge.
  3. Stack the right shin: ankle outside left knee, knee over ankle.
  4. Activate both feet, drawing your toes toward your knees.
  5. Exhale; fold from your hips and rest your palms ahead.

Hold

  1. Keep both sit bones grounded.
  2. Keep your shins parallel and both feet active.
  3. Lengthen your chest forward from the creases of your hips.
  4. Keep your neck long and your jaw relaxed.

Exit

  1. Inhale and sit upright, using your hands for support.
  2. Unstack your legs and straighten them.
  3. Repeat with your left leg on top for the same time.
Breathing
Inhale to lengthen; exhale to fold; breathe gently.
Gaze
Eyes closed, an option.
Duration
About one minute per side.

  • Raised seatRaise your seat with blankets until your knees sit lower.
  • Supported thighPlace a block or blanket under the thigh, near the knee.
  • Unstacked shinsPlace the upper foot before the opposite knee, on the floor.
  • Supported torsoPlace a bolster across your legs to support your chest.

Variations

  • Upright: keep your shins stacked and lift your torso.
  • Upright twist: turn toward the upper leg.
  • Yin Square: rounded spine, unstacked shins; 3–5 minutes per side.

Signals of effort

  • Flexion and external rotation of both hips.
  • Bent knees with ankles beside the opposite knees.
  • Partial weight on the palms and wrists.
  • Breathing that loses its regular rhythm.
