Kukkuṭāsanaकुक्कुटासन

Lift your Lotus on both hands, arms threaded between thighs and calves.

Steps

Support

Both palms; pelvis and legs suspended, with no other support.

Enter

  1. Sit in Lotus, each foot resting on the opposite thigh.
  2. Thread each hand between its thigh and calf, near the knee.
  3. Slide your arms through to the elbows; point your fingers forward.
  4. Ground your palms, exhale, and lift your body with straight arms.

Hold

  1. Press both palms; keep your fingers pointing forward.
  2. Straighten your elbows and keep your shoulders away from your ears.
  3. Lengthen your spine; keep your head upright.
  4. Keep your feet flexed and your legs folded in Lotus.

Exit

  1. Exhale and lower your buttocks to the floor.
  2. Withdraw your arms; uncross and straighten your legs.
  3. Reverse your Lotus crossing and repeat.
Breathing
Exhale when lifting and lowering; normal breathing while holding.
Gaze
Look at a fixed point ahead, head upright.
Duration
For as long as you can comfortably hold it.

  • Gradual threadingSlightly lift your seated Lotus to thread each arm.
  • Seated LotusKeep your buttocks grounded in Padmāsana, without lifting.
  • Half Lotus ScaleWithout threading arms, keep your lower calf and foot grounded.

  • Ūrdhva Kukkuṭāsana: Lotus on both upper arms, without threading.
  • Pārśva Kukkuṭāsana: thigh on opposite upper arm, torso twisted.
  • Garbha Piṇḍāsana entry: from Garbha Piṇḍāsana, lifting on an inhale.

Signals of effort

  • Body weight on both hands, with wrists extended.
  • Full Lotus: externally rotated hips and deeply bent knees.
  • Balance without support from your pelvis or feet.
