Siṃhāsana IIसिंहासन II

From full lotus, shift forward onto palms and knees, arms straight and tongue extended.

Steps

Support

Both palms and both knees; feet remain on the thighs.

Enter

  1. Arrange full lotus, each foot resting on the opposite thigh.
  2. Place your palms ahead, fingers pointing forward.
  3. Rise onto your knees and move your pelvis forward and down.
  4. Straighten your arms, engage your buttocks, and extend your back.
  5. Open your mouth and extend your tongue toward your chin.

Hold

  1. Keep your weight only on your palms and knees.
  2. Keep your arms straight.
  3. Keep your chest open and your legs in lotus.
  4. Direct your tongue toward your chin.

Exit

  1. Draw your tongue in and return to sitting in lotus.
  2. Lift your hands and uncross your legs.
  3. To repeat, reverse the crossing and hold for equal time.
Breathing
Breathe through your mouth while holding the pose.
Gaze
Between your eyebrows; alternative: tip of your nose.
Duration
About 30 seconds with each leg crossing.

  • Vīrāsana with a block: alternative without lotusSit on a block between your feet; practice the facial gesture.
  • Chair: alternative without hand supportSit with feet supported; open your mouth and extend your tongue.

Variations

  • Siṃhāsana I: ankles crossed beneath buttocks, hands on knees.
  • Lion in Vajrāsana: hands on knees, exhaling with “ha.”
  • Siṃhāsana II with roaring: inhale nasally; exhale saying “ha.”

Signals of effort

  • Full lotus with external rotation of both hips.
  • Deep flexion of both knees.
  • Weight on the wrists with straight arms.
  • Back extension and tongue reaching toward the chin.
